The Challenge

E-commerce conversion rates suffer heavily from the "fitting room problem." Customers don't know how a garment or accessory will look on them, leading to cart abandonment and high return rates.

The founder of TryOn Live had a vision: use AI to allow shoppers to upload a photo and instantly see themselves wearing the product. The challenge? They needed a working MVP ready for the Shopify App Store in less than a week to hit a marketing deadline.

The Solution

Agencies quoted this project at $15,000+ and a 6-week timeline. I built, tested, and submitted it to the Shopify App Store.

Technical Implementation

• Shopify App Bridge: Built a seamless embedded app experience within the Shopify admin dashboard using React and TypeScript.
• AI Integration: Leveraged Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Vision AI to segment clothing and dynamically map it onto user-uploaded images.
• Scalable Backend: Deployed a lightweight, high-performance Node.js backend backed by PostgreSQL to manage store installations and billing webhooks.
• Theme Extension: Created a performant Shopify Theme App Extension to inject the "Virtual Try-On" button directly onto product pages without degrading store load speeds.

Engineering

• Tests: Webhook and billing-path coverage for install, uninstall, and Shopify billing events before App Store submission.
• CI/CD: GitHub Actions for typecheck, build, and deploy of the embedded app plus theme extension.
• Security: Shopify OAuth, HMAC-verified webhooks, and no persistence of shopper photos beyond the try-on request.
• Deployment: Production Node.js + PostgreSQL on GCP; live listing in the Shopify App Store after first-round review.
